John T. Povlishock, Ph.D., retired professor and former Chair of the Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology at the VCU School of Medicine, has had a transformative impact on neuroscience education and research.
To honor his 40+ year legacy at VCU, alumni and supporters are establishing an annual lecture series, hosting world-renowned experts in brain injury. These lectures will showcase leading-edge research, promote academic exchange and inspire the next generation of neuroscientists.
Your gift will help grow this initiative, strengthening the VCU Department of Neuroscience and Anatomy in its mission to advance research, education and clinical care.
Throughout his career, he shaped the field’s understanding of the neuronal and vascular effects of brain trauma through his groundbreaking research on traumatic axonal injury — a defining feature of traumatic brain injury. Povlishock has also authored more than 300 scientific papers and book chapters.
As editor-in-chief of the Journal of Neurotrauma and president of the National Neurotrauma Society, his leadership has extended beyond the lab and classroom. Povlishock’s contributions have influenced both clinical practice and scientific inquiry around the world.
